Hardware Needed for Internet Connection

To connect to the Internet, you need a modem. The type of modem depends on your Internet service:

• Dial-up needs a telephone modem.
• DSL needs a DSL modem.
• Cable needs a cable modem.

Your Internet provider may give you a modem, sometimes for a fee. You can also buy your own modem if you want a better or cheaper option.

A router allows multiple devices to use the same Internet connection. A wireless router creates a Wi-Fi network at home.

You don’t always need a router. You can connect your computer directly to a modem using an Ethernet cable. Some modems have a built-in router, so you won’t need extra hardware for Wi-Fi.
