AutoRecover in Word

AutoRecover helps you restore unsaved documents if Word crashes or you forget to save. Word automatically saves your work in a temporary folder every 10 minutes.

To recover a document:

  1. Open Word. If autosaved versions exist, the Document Recovery pane appears on the left.
  2. Click on the file to open and restore it.

If the file is missing, you can check all autosaved files:

  1. Click the File tab.

  2. Select Manage Versions > Recover Unsaved Documents.

Note: If you worked on a document for less than 10 minutes, AutoRecover may not have saved it.
