Microsoft Windows

Windows is an OS created by Microsoft in the 1980s. Popular versions include:

  • Windows 10 (2015)
  • Windows 8 (2012)
  • Windows 7 (2009)

Windows is pre-installed on most PCs, making it the most widely used OS in the world.

macOS

Apple created macOS (previously called OS X) for its Mac computers. Some versions are:

  • Mojave (2018)
  • High Sierra (2017)
  • Sierra (2016)

MacOS users make up less than 10% of global OS users. This is partly because Apple computers are more expensive. However, many people prefer macOS for its design and ease of use.

Linux

Linux is an open-source OS. This means anyone can modify and share it. Unlike Windows, which is proprietary, Linux is free to use.

There are many Linux distributions (versions) to choose from. Linux users make up less than 2% of global OS users. However, most servers run on Linux because it is highly customizable.
