RAM (random-access memory) is the short-term memory of your computer. It temporarily stores data while the computer is working on tasks.

When the computer is turned off, the data in RAM is erased. If you are working on a file, you need to save it to the hard drive to avoid losing it. The hard drive provides long-term storage.

RAM is measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). More RAM allows your computer to handle more tasks at the same time. If you don’t have enough RAM, your computer may run slowly when multiple programs are open. Many people add extra RAM to improve their computer's performance.
