Every computer uses folders to organize files and applications. These folders look like real-life file folders. You can find them on your desktop or in the file system.

Each operating system has its own way of managing files. On a Windows PC, you use File Explorer. On a Mac, you use Finder. Both tools help you find and organize your files.

Opening your computer's file system

To open your file system, look for the icon in the toolbar. On a PC, the File Explorer icon looks like a folder. On a Mac, the Finder icon looks like a face.

Basic Navigation

Navigating is easy. Double-click a file to open it. Use the Navigation pane to browse different folders.

Deleting Files

When you delete a file, it goes to the Trash or Recycle Bin. You can restore it if needed.

To permanently delete it, right-click the Trash or Recycle Bin and select "Empty."
