Keeping Your Computer Clean
Dust can damage your computer over time. Cleaning it regularly helps it work properly and prevents costly repairs.
Cleaning the Keyboard
Dirt, dust, and food can get stuck under the keys. This can cause problems. Here’s how to clean it:
- Unplug the keyboard from the computer. If using a PS/2 port, turn off the computer first.
- Turn the keyboard upside down and gently shake out dust and dirt.
- Use compressed air to remove dust between the keys.
- Wipe the keys with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol. Do not pour liquid directly on the keyboard.
- Let it dry completely before reconnecting.
If you spill liquid on the keyboard:
- Turn off the computer and unplug the keyboard.
- Flip the keyboard upside down to let the liquid drain.
- If the liquid is sticky, rinse the keyboard under running water. Let it dry for two days before using it again.
- To avoid this, keep drinks away from your computer.
Cleaning the Mouse
There are two types of mice: optical and mechanical. Both need cleaning to work properly.
- Optical mice collect dust near the light, which can affect movement.
- Mechanical mice gather dust inside, making tracking difficult.
To clean your mouse:
- Unplug it from the computer. If using a PS/2 port, turn off the computer first.
- Wipe the top and bottom with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol.
- For mechanical mice, remove the tracking ball. Clean it and the inside of the mouse with a damp cloth.
- Let all parts dry before putting them back together.
For quick cleaning, move the mouse back and forth on a clean sheet of paper. Dust will stick to the paper.
Regular cleaning keeps your computer working well and helps it last longer.
