Text boxes help highlight important text. They also make it easy to move text around in a document. You can format text boxes with different styles and effects.

How to Insert a Text Box

  1. Click the Insert tab.

  2. Select Text Box in the Text group.

  3. A menu will appear. Click Draw Text Box.

  4. Click and drag on the document to create a text box.

  5. The cursor will appear inside the box. Start typing your text.

  6. To format the text, use the Home or Format tab.

You can also use built-in text boxes. These have preset styles and sizes. If you choose one, it will appear automatically.


How to Move a Text Box

  1. Click on the text box.
  2. Place the mouse pointer on the edge of the box. It will turn into a cross with arrows.
  3. Click and drag the box to a new position.

How to Resize a Text Box

  1. Click on the text box.
  2. Drag any of the small circles (handles) on the sides or corners.

  3. Adjust it to the size you want.

Changing the Look of a Text Box

Change the Style

  1. Click on the text box.
  2. Go to the Format tab.

  3. Click the More drop-down arrow in the Shape Styles group.

  4. Choose a style from the menu.

The text box will now have the new style. You can also change the fill color and outline using formatting options.

Change the Shape of a Text Box

  1. Click on the text box.
  2. Go to the Format tab.

  3. Click Edit Shape > Change Shape.

  4. Choose a new shape from the menu.

The text box will now appear in the selected shape.
